Introducing Jim Williams, Author of Parenting On Point

Jim & wife, Carol, holding granddaughters - Brennan & Madison

In the early 1990s when his son Curt was a senior in high school and his daughter Beth was a freshman Jim became a parent volunteer for STARS.

(Students Taking a Right Stand). STARS exists to help students make healthy lifestyle choices and refrain from the use of alcohol, other drugs and violence. Jim was very upset with the survey results concerning the use of alcohol and marijuana by the high school students.

He started mobilizing the county by speaking to adults in various venues, Chamber of Commerce, rotary, churches, PTOs, etc. By the fall of 1995 adults were beginning to respond to his message, the message that adults need to have a common voice for students concerning alcohol and other drugs.

On November 11, 1995 his son Curt was killed by a drunk driver in Birmingham, Alabama. Curt was a sophomore at Birmingham-Southern College and captain of the tennis team. Six months later Jim lost his job of 23 years with a corporate 50 company.

During this time of personal grief, Jim wrote a biographical sketch about his relationship with God and how it affected his past and his future. He calls it his "Rollercoaster Ride with God." He especially encourages teens who are struggling with their faith to read it. The main menu provides a link just for teens.

STARS asked Jim to give a speech to one of Nashville's local high schools. Although at first he didn't want to do it Jim gave a speech and from that day forward his life has not been the same.

In addition to the various programs that have been outlined on this web page Jim is a spokesperson for the United Way. He writes articles for local newspapers. He teaches parenting classes at the Nashville Jail. He conducts parenting workshops for Cumberland Heights, a local rehabilitation center. He is a mentor for children at the Baptist Children's home.

Finally, he has been married to his college sweetheart Carol since 1970. It has been because of her love and support that he has been able to influence so many children and adults.
